“The Tabernacle its construction and furnishings”, Part 4

Once again we continue with our examination of the Tabernacle with a look at the design and
construction of the “
Courtyard” with its curtains, post, sockets, ropes, pins, and etc. our primary
objective however being to see just how these items depict our return to God’s favor and to At-one-
ment (or Atonement) between God and man.

As we had previously stated the courtyard represents the
condition of tentative (provisional)
justification, which is entered by way of faith in Christ, this was pictured in “entrance curtain” the only
means of access into the courtyard area.

I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and fine
pasture
.”(John 10:9)

Most assuredly, I say to you he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up
some other way, the same is a thief and a robber, but he who enters by the door is the
shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls
his own sheep by name and leads them out
.” (John 10:1-3)

For the entrance to the courtyard provide a curtain twenty cubits long, of blue, purple and
scarlet yarn and finely twisted linen, the work of an embroider, with four post and four bases
.”
(
Exodus 27:16)


















The entrance curtain or Gate represents Jesus Christ our Lord, it was of white linen, wrought with
blue, purple and scarlet needlework, the
white linen represents his righteousness (his purity), the blue
represents his faithfulness, the
scarlet represents the blood that was shed, and the purple represents
his being highly exalted to the right hand of God (Royalty), and thus the gate to the courtyard pointed to
Christ as the “
Faithful and True” as the “Redeemer” and “Savior” of the world, and as the “King of
Kings
” and “Lord of Lords”. As our Lord stated,

I am the way and the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me.” (John
14:6
)

There were five posts in the gate, the Common Version reads 4, but since the gate was 20 cubits wide
and the post were set five cubits apart (
Exodus 27:13-15), then that would mean that there were four
spaces, each containing five cubits square of curtain, thus five post would be needed to hold up the
curtain, else the outer edge of either the first or the last space would have no support.

Actually the Hebrew character for the number four is very similar to the character for the number five;
however there is a much simpler solution to this dilemma which we will present when next we examine the
white linen curtains which encircled the tabernacle enclosure.

It has been
suggested that the five post supporting the entrance curtain may very well represent the five
justified believers who most conspicuously
held up (i.e. proclaimed to the world) Christ’s righteous
character,
Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and Saint Paul.

The courtyard was 100 cubits long by 50 cubits wide (150 ft. X 75 ft.), with post 5 cubits high
and 5 cubits apart
(that is 7 ½ ft. X 7 ½ ft.); standing as it were, within reach of each other, yet too far
apart to lean upon each other, their only connection being the curtain which hanging upon each, tied them
all together…
The curtain was made of fine twined linen and symbolized the righteousness of
Christ. The
post of corruptible wood firmly set in sockets of copper symbolize the Church
composed of weak
(corruptible) mortals liable to fall, yet standing by the power of God; not built
upon the sand of the desert, but having a sure foundation. (

Pastor Russell states, “
The posts which stood in the court and upheld the white curtains,
represented justified believers… They are of wood, a corruptible material. This shows that they are not
actually perfect as human beings; for since
human perfection is represented by copper, those posts
should be either made of copper, or covered with copper to represent actually perfect human beings. They
were made of wood, but were set into sockets of copper, which teaches us that, though actually
imperfect, their
standing is that of perfect human beings. It would be impossible to more clearly represent
Justification by faith.” (T 113)

“The justification spoken of here is what we frequently term "
tentative justification," because he is
speaking of the Christian in the "
court" condition, before they reach the point of full consecration at
the "
door" of the Tabernacle proper.”

Their
caps (chapiters or ferrules), fillets and hooks were of silver. As we are told to search for truth as
for silver, and as David likens the words of the Lord to silver purified seven times, we conclude then that
truth is symbolized by silver, which thus adorned the post, clothing their heads with beauty forming the
ornaments of the body, and being the hook or connection which bound them to the curtain of linen, and
by it to each other.” (

“The work of the Church (pictured in the posts) in the past ages and in the future is to hold up to the
view of
the world without (those represented as being in the “camp” condition) the spotless
righteousness of Christ. Hidden behind the snowy white curtain covered by this robe, standing alone by
divine power, but
linked together by the truth, (the silver fillets or rods) they form a long united row,
reaching down the stream of time “
a glittering host in bright array” or as Peter says; “A chosen
generation, a royal priesthood, a peculiar people, a holy nation
” living for the purpose of “showing
forth the praises of him who hath called us out of darkness into his marvelous light
” Truly as the
Apostle Paul says, we are surrounded by a “
cloud of witnesses”. Within the court there were solemn
mysteries transpiring, and many beautiful sights which it was not lawful for those without to even catch a
glimpse of. They must first see and appreciate the righteousness of Christ (
as pictured in the “Entrance
Curtain
) “For he who comes to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of those
who diligently seek him
.” (R100)
