“A Great Storm Approaches” Part 8
Thus far we have four events that we know are presently in the process of fulfillment, the first three
having begun some time back, save perhaps for the second part of number 2, that is if we apply it
specifically to the incursion of Islam, number 4 on the other hand seems to be an event only now
beginning to unfold.
1) The Great Earthquake
2) The drying up of the Euphrates, making way for the kings that come from the east
3) Elijah smiting the Jordan
4) Israel’s abandonment, all her lovers forsaking her
So what comes next?
Let us begin by taking another look at Rev 16:12; many Bible Students believe that we are presently
awaiting the fulfillment of Verse 13, so what does the text indicate is to happen next?
“And the sixth poured out his bowl upon the great river, the [river] Euphrates; and the water
thereof was dried up, that the way might be made ready for the kings that [come] from the
east. And I saw [coming] out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast,
and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits, as if it were frogs: for they are
spirits of demons, working signs; which go forth unto the kings of the whole world, to gather
them together unto the war of the great day of God, the Almighty. (Rev 16:12, 13)
The highlighted text above indicates several interesting things to us,
1) That a new entity has emerged on the scene previously unmentioned by the Revelator, i.e. the False
2) That some type of confederacy or joint venture has taken place between these three elements,
3) That they appear to be of one accord in declaring or pronouncing something whether it’s the
same declaration or three similar declarations is yet to be determined, and
4) These declarations, pronouncements or what have you are the works, the instigations of demons, the
fallen angels working signs, visible wonders, a.k.a. lying wonders.
Therefore it would seem only prudent that we should investigate the scriptures to determine what
possible events may have led up to this conglomeration of individuals. Now we understand in part why
they unite, but why these particular three? We will address this question momentarily but first the
general reason for this confederation is abundantly clear, viz. the preservation of the present order.
Remember what the Pastor said about the hitherto upholders of the law (government officials, leaders,
politicians and etc.), and how they have been “sitting on the safety valve” as he expressed it,
(exercising governmental control and restraint over the masses) all the time knowing full well right that the
pressure was building up, and that the people would not long be held in check, but nevertheless hoping
against odds to put it off as long as possible.
When the time finally comes when they know they can no longer stem the tide, when they realize that it’s
about to blow and they are losing control then they will seek for an alliance a confederacy between
themselves and the professing church, this both parties will deem expedient not only for the sake
of persevering the present order, but for their own self preservation, this despite the Lord’s warning
against such a tactic,
“Say ye not, A confederacy, to all them to whom this people shall say, A confederacy (Do not
participate in this confederacy, this conspiracy or unholy alliance); neither fear ye their fear, nor be
afraid (Do not fear what they fear, that their influence is waning and that the destruction of the
present order is imminent, for the kingdom of heaven draws nigh).” Isa 8:12
“What do you conspire against the LORD? He will make an utter end of it (of your schemes and
plans to preserve the present order). Affliction will not rise up a second time. For while tangled like
thorns (intertwined for strength through means of ecumenism, federation, and confederacy, between
yourselves and with the powers that be, both the scene and the unseen, remember the Adversary has
a stake in this likewise he too is interested in persevering the present order), and while drunken like
drunkards (having devised a doctrine, a “drink” an intoxication in the supremacy of their plans and
schemes) they shall be devoured like stubble fully dried (quickly and violently, compare with Rev 18:
21). From you (or within you) comes forth one who plots evil against the LORD, a wicked
counselor (the one who directs or counsels these people, this confederacy, is none other than the
Abandoned One; Satan himself).” Nah 1:9, 10
Now back to our question, why should these three particular elements unite? More particularly why
should the dragon wish to seek an alliance with the other two?
We know that the dragon represents the civil powers, nations, governments and etc., and that the
beast here represents the ten-horned beast of Chapter 13 with its notable “little horn” of Papacy,
and that the false prophet is most likely a combination of the two horned beast and the image of
the beast (i.e. The Church of England and the Protestant confederation), these latter two, the beast and
the false prophet representative of the Church Nominal. So how would it prove of any advantage to
the civil powers to unite with the nominal church especially seeing as they are without the
support of the people, their influence having waned (i.e. the Euphrates drying up)?
Obviously something must have happened to change this particular predicament in some form or
fashion. Turning to the Scriptures once again I believe we shall not only find the answers to this
question, but likewise to other questions we may have been pondering, and in so doing determine the
correct sequence of events numbers 5-8.
Before we begin however recall once again the words of the Pastor as taken from the 1916 forward of
the Forth Volume,
“The Bible points out that about this time the Nominal Church systems of the world will rise to
great prominence again in connection with the Civil powers. We can readily see the grounds for
this. All the kingdoms (nations, governments), financially weakened, will soon realize the necessity for
keeping a dominating grip upon the public and preventing anything akin to Socialism and Anarchy. They
will naturally look to the great religious institutions called Churches to support them, to threaten
the people with future torments, and in general to help keep the Ship of State from being
overturned. The churches also will be ready and glad for such an opportunity…”
Now recall our response,
“Now not all of the brethren are in agreement with the foregoing as they cannot fandom to see how the
Nominal Church in its present weakened condition, especially with the Euphrates drying up could possibly
have any leverage left over the people, at least enough to be of any value to the civil powers. In this the
information age, the age of enlightenment there just aren’t too many deluded souls out there save
possibly in some third world countries who would be moved by any further threats of torments …”
This is a rather difficult area for many of the brethren to accept they see Babylon as already fallen and
therefore cannot imagine it ever rising again and especially to any great prominence as the Pastor here
states, many are quick to quote Rev 18:2,
“Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for
every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hated bird!”
However it should be noted that this fall is a fall from God’s favor, NOT necessarily the favor of the
world. As you recall “Babylon had been a golden cup in the Lord's hands.” (Jer 51:7) the cup
suggesting that at one time the unfaithful church had been the receptacle of divine, truth (blessings,
favor). This fall from God’s favor has nothing to do with the favor of the world, as the aims of both the
church and the world are still along similar lines.
“Upon the prophetic page we may clearly read the doom of Babylon, Christendom; and it is none the less
clearly expressed in the signs of the times. That her destruction will be sudden, violent and complete is
thus forcibly stated: "And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the
sea, saying, Thus, with violence, shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be
found no more at all." (Rev 18:8, 21; Jer 51:63, 64, 42, 24-26) And yet that it was to undergo a
gradual consuming process is shown by Daniel (7:26)--"But the judgment shall sit, and they shall
take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end." The Papal dominion (and
much of the abject reverence of the people for ecclesiasticism in general), as already shown, (Volume 3
Page 40) was broken down at the beginning of the Time of the End--1799; and, though the subsequent
process of consumption has been slow, and there have been occasional signs of apparent recovery, which
never seemed more flattering than at present, the assurance of Papacy's final destruction is positive, and
its death-struggle will be violent. First, however, she must attain more of her old-time prestige,
which will be shared with a confederated association of her daughters. Together they will be
lifted up, that together they may be violently thrown down.” (D 37)
Papacy boast of this return to power and former glory, note the following which the Pastor took from a
Catholic journal of his day,
"The Papacy will regain its temporal sovereignty, because it is useful and convenient to the Church. It gives
the head executive of the church a fuller liberty and a fuller sway. The Pope can be no king's subject long.
It is not in keeping with the divine office to be so. It cramps him and narrows his influence for good.
Europe has acknowledged this influence, and will be forced to bow to it in greater times of need
than this. Social upheavals, and the red hand of anarchy, will yet crown Leo or his successor
with the reality of power which the third circle symbolizes, and which was once recognized
Yes, as the day of trouble draws on, ecclesiasticism will endeavor to use its power and influence
more and more to secure its own political welfare (not to mention its mere survival), by its (joint)
control of the turbulent elements of society (that is in conjunction with the dragon and the false
prophet); but in the crisis of the near future the lawless element will spurn all conservative
influence and break over all restraints, the red hand of Anarchy will do its dreadful work, and
Babylon, Christendom, social, political and ecclesiastical, shall fall.” (D 39)
"And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus,
with violence, shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all."
In the scriptures an angel can depict any messenger or agency used by the Lord to accomplish his will,
whether animate or inanimate, in the text above the mighty angel spoken of here is in reference to an
inanimate agency, an earthquake more precisely “a mighty and great earthquake”, the great
earthquake spoken of in Rev 16:18. This great earthquake (or revolution, which we are presently in the
beginning stages) will be the catalyst which will bring about the rise (the lifting up) to great prominence
the Church Nominal. This same angel or agency in the end, when it reaches its peak will also be the
destruction of the Church Nominal.
Revelation 13, 16, and 17 all suggest a brief rise for Papacy before its fall. Isaiah 23 likewise
shows the same.
“And it shall be, at the end of seventy years that the LORD will deal with Tyre (typifying mystic
Babylon the Great). She will return to her hire (return to her former ways), and commit fornication
with all the kingdoms of the world on the face of the earth.” (Verse 17)
“This is a picture of Papacy as a harlot (Rev 17:3–5). Papacy was given a deadly wound by Napoleon.
In some respects, this wound was more effective than Luther’s Reformation. The wound was very effective
in the hard, commercial world, whereas Luther was very effective to the godly person. Luther spoke in
ecclesiastical circles and opened the eyes of the truth-seeker. On the other hand, Napoleon was a great
conqueror. His humiliation of the Pope and imprisoning him and his seizing the Vatican lasted for 70 years.
The Vatican actually became French property. Papacy likens the 70 years of humiliation to Israel’s 70
years of captivity in Babylon.
Napoleon imprisoned the Pope in 1799. Seventy years later, in 1870, during the time the Papacy
was shorn of its temporal dominion, the Pope uttered the doctrine of papal infallibility. This was a
seemingly absurd time to utter such a boastful claim—but Papacy was singing as a harlot, calling to mind
her former greatness. The year 1870 marked the beginning of wooing her former paramours—and the
effort was successful. The Vatican state was restored (Papacy got back its temporal dominion) under
Mussolini in 1929 with the signing of the Lateran Treaty. Papacy is coming back into power.” (“The
Book of Isaiah”, Page 124)
But is this enough to sway the people? We think not, it will take far more than mere words and flattery
to gain the peoples reverence (respect) once again. As we had stated previously something happens to
change things, something which draws the people (those under religious restraint) back under the
influence of the church, which in turn leads to a confederacy between the church and the state in their
efforts to quell the people (the sea class, those not under religious restraint) who are about to boil over.
We will see just what this is in our next post, your servant Brother John
